Laboratory of Experimental Immunology (LEI)

Division of Basic Sciences, National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health.

John R. Ortaldo, Ph.D., Chief

The LEI consists of three sections: Experimental Therapeutics Section (ETS), Cellular and Molecular Immunology Section (CMIS), and Leukocyte Cell Biology Section (LCBS),.

The LEI conducts studies on biological response modification and the application of these studies to the therapy of cancer. In-depth studies are performed on cell-mediated immune effector mechanisms, molecular biology of lymphokine and cytokine gene structure and expression, lymphokine and cytokine biological activities, monoclonal antibodies (mAb), growth factors, and other host responses that may be useful for cancer treatment. Selected biological response modifiers (BRMs) are studied for their effects on the immune system and other aspects of host responses, with a particular focus on the therapeutic implications of these effects. Based on such information, protocols for therapy of tumors in experimental animals and in cancer patients are developed and studies are performed to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of selected BRMs.

The Laboratory of Experimental Immunology periodically has openings for outstanding postdoctoral fellows. Please direct inquiries to the appropriate Section Chief via the indicated e-mail address or via regular mail at Room 31-93, Building 560, NCI-FCRDC, Frederick, MD 21702-1201. Applications from minorities and women are encouraged.
