Cancer Genetics Working Group

A clear need exists to address rapidly evolving questions about genetic predisposition to cancer; integrate the discovery of "cancer genes" with increasing knowledge about cancer risk; and apply this knowledge by providing information, education and effective intervention to individuals at high risk for cancer.

In April 1996, NCI Director Dr. Richard Klausner convened a Working Group to help NCI plan how best to respond to these opportunities and challenges. The mission of the Cancer Genetics Working Group is to identify broad scientific opportunities that would enable NCI to

  • Identify every major human gene that predisposes people to cancer as well as genetic variations that affect cancer risk
  • Apply these discoveries in clinical practice to help patients at risk
  • Identify and address the psychosocial, ethical, and legal issues associated with cancer susceptibility
